Christ Church Cathedral
The excellent miss of peat 1886, landslide which died two people and hurt numerous buildings destroyed Holy Trinity Church of Stanley. The foundation stone for its replacement was put in 1890 and a new, large brick-and-stone Christ's church opened in 1892. With its brightly painted, corrugated and metal roof and attractive windows from colored glass, cathedral - the most outstanding place of interest of the city.
Commemorative plaques on its walls observe the memory of local men who served in the British Forces in World War I and World War II and also great and advantage of the Falkland Islands.
Windows from colored glass - the brightest feature of church. As you enter from the main door, you face the Post Liberating Window of the Memorial with a crest of the Falkland Islands and the motto of islands, ‘Wish the Right’. Lower crests of various British forces involved in the conflict of 1982 and, below it, illustrations of three features of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia: The arch of Cathedral and Baleen presents to Stanley; the typical settlement of a farm represents Camp; both the church of Grytviken and surrounding mountains represent South Georgia. In other end of the same wall the charming window of Mary Watson devoted to very pleasant local nurse standing with her bicycle on call.
Within century of cathedral in 1992, members of congregation sewed illustrated Hassoks. A collection, representing many aspects of life on the Falkland Islands, I grew up to more than 50 of cozy 'kneelers'.
