The biggest of three historical huts on Ross Island, it placed 25 men in quite crowded conditions. The long, narrow building faces the hut; it held bathrooms with separate conveniences to officials.
After the last expedition of Scott of 10 members of the group of the Ross Sea of the Fatigue expedition of Shackleton got stuck here in May, 1915 when their ship the Aurora was carried away from its mooring. Their difficult task was in putting warehouses for the group crossing the continent from the Weddell Sea to use on the second half of their trip. As the Endurance was broken, warehouses were never used. Men passed very difficult 20 here in months before the team of the Aurora could return the ship.
To enter the hut, you pass through external area of an entrance. On the left stables on side of the hut overlooking the beach. Still at an entrance today the box of eggs of a penguin, a heap of crying of the press, shovel and the tool hanging on walls and the bicycle of the geologist Griffith Taylor.
In the appropriate hut which was isolated by the seaweed sewed in jute bags you will stand in what, the expedition called the deck of a disorder. According to practice of the Royal fleet, Scott certain participants of an expedition to officials and men. The deck of a disorder placed men: Crean, Keohane, Ford, Omelchenko, Gerov, Clissold, Lashly, Edgar Evans and Hooper. To the right there is a kitchen, with a big plate.
Proceeding further to the hut by what to be as soon as the sharing wall made of suitcases, you will arrive to guard. Directly in a back the dark room and Ponting's bed. To the right laboratory, along with Wright and Simpson's beds. To the left of a table on all length of their alcove were guard: Dachas (top bed) and Vishnya-Garrard (lower bed); Oates (the top bed, only with an area below); and Mears (top bed) and Atkinson (lower bed). Everywhere on the hut of a condition and photographic deliveries. There is strong, very pleasant musty smell as this of dusty old books and pony straw. Boxes hold candles which could be used still today. Logos on many deliveries remain familiar with drafts of the label which are hardly changed even now. Surely look for phone which connected this hut to the hut of Opening, using the bared wire put through sea ice.
The place underwent the extensive project of restoration of AHT from 2008 to 2015. Between 700 and 800 visitors annually land in the Cape of Evans, doing it is most often the visited tourist attraction of the Ross Sea. Only allow 12 people in the hut once, and only allow 40 people ashore at once.
